Estherville, IA (KICD) — The Estherville Police Department and Emmet County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Northwest Bank in Estherville this morning for a report of a robbery.
Estherville Police Chief Brent Shatto says they were advised by the reporting party a male suspect was in the drive-through banking lanes waving a gun and wearing a bandana. It was also reported there were at least two other people in the vehicle.
Authorities responded to the bank drive up and confronted the suspects. The suspects complied with the directions from authorities, and two male suspects were detained. Following the investigation, it was determined that the gun was a toy, but bank video had confirmed that the suspect pulled the bandana up around his mouth and nose several times during the incident.
Officers identified the suspect with the gun and mask as 20-year-old Simon Gebrehiwot of Worthington, Minnesota. Gebrehiwot was placed under arrest for 1st-degree harassment. It was also determined that Gebrehiwot had an outstanding warrant for his arrest through the Minnesota Department of Corrections for parole violation with the original charge being “threats of violence.”
He was taken to the Emmet County Jail where he was booked and awaits an initial appearance before a magistrate. The other occupants in the vehicle, including a small child, were released without charges following the initial investigation. More charges in the case may be pending.
While officers were at Northwest Bank, they were also dispatched to 939 North 5th Street for a camper fire. The caller for that situation reported there was a pull-type camper fully engulfed in flames parked in the driveway. Police later determined that the camper had been occupied at the time of the fire, but the occupants were able to escape with only minor smoke inhalation.
