Spencer, IA (KICD)–KICD News kept track of contested statewide and local races on election night.

Republican Joni Ernst is the winner in the highly contested race for the U.S. Senate over Bruce Braley. Ernst is the first ever female combat veteran elected to the Senate.

Republican Gov. Terry Branstad has been elected to a sixth term over Democrat Jack Hatch.

4th District Republican Congressman Steve King has been elected to a 7th term. Voters elected King over Democrat Jim Mowrer.

House District 2 Republican Megan Hess won handily over Terry Manwarren for a 2nd term. House District 3 Republican Dan Huseman was re-elected over Democrat Greg Fritzsche.

Democrat Michael Fitzgerald has won his ninth term as Iowa treasurer, defeating former conservative radio host Sam Clovis. Voters re-elected Fitzgerald to the office he’s held since 1983.

Republican Mary Mosiman has been elected to her first full term as Iowa auditor. Voters chose Mosiman, who was appointed to the position in 2013, over Democrat Jon Neiderbach.

Democrat Attorney General Tom Miller has been elected to another term over Republican Adam Gregg. He’s served in the position since being first elected in 1978, except for four years in the 1990s after a failed bid for governor.

Republican Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey defeated Democrat Sherrie Taha for another term.

Republican Paul Pate will serve as Secretary of State after a win over Democrat Brad Anderson.

In Clay County the lone contested race was for the Agriculture Extension Council. The five spots will be filled by Bradley Brown, Gary Johnson, Renee Juza, Sarah Frederick and Thomas Maertens.

For Dickinson County incumbent Recorder Ann Ditsworth notched more than twice the votes of Democrat Anita Sorensen. Jeremy Bolluyt, Linda Moore and Daniel Sedlacek were elected to the Hospital Board of Trustees.

In Osceola County voters soundly defeated a measure to trim the number of Supervisors from five to three. Over 70 percent voted against the change.

A six-way race for two open seats on the Emmet County Board of Supervisors saw no party candidate Jeff Quastad and Republican John Pluth coming out on top.

In Palo Alto County Democrat Peter Hart will take over as County Attorney defeating Incumbent Republican Lyssa Henderson. Incumbent District 2 Supervisor Craig Merrill defeated Steven Farnsworth. Democrat incumbent District 5 Supervisor Linus Solberg won over Mary Hilfiker. Republican Sue Ruppert is the new Recorder. Republican Robin Jamison was elected Treaurer over Democrat Ted Riley.

Republican Buena Vista County Attorney Dave Patton received over 70 percent of the vote to retain his spot over Elizabeth La Pole.

In Cherokee County there will be a new recorder as Republican Mark Murphy defeated incumbent Democrat Dawn Miller with just over 51 percent of the vote. Republican Gary Lundquist defeated Chuck Tolzien for the District 4 Supervisor seat.

In Pocahontas County Clarence Siepker was elected as District 5 Supervisor. JoAnn Rae Peters was chosen for District 4 Supervisor.

There were no contested races in O’Brien County.
