Fatal Crash in Dickinson County

Dickinson County, IA (KICD)— One person was killed in a crash in Dickinson County on Thursday.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a vehicle versus pedestrian crash just after 11:15 a.m. on Highway 9 near the intersection of 255th Avenue.

Upon arrival, responders found a Kenworth semi, driven by 42-year-old Jason Johnsen of Sioux Falls, had been traveling west on the highway when he struck a pedestrian walking east.

The police report states Johnsen attempted to make evasive action to avoid hitting the pedestrian but was not successful.
Lifesaving measures were performed on the pedestrian, identified as 23-year-old

Casey Spaeth of Spirit Lake, but those measures were unsuccessful and Spaeth was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Iowa Department of Transportation was called in and all traffic was detoured around the scene for the duration of the investigation.
