Semi Vs. Car Accident South of Spencer’s North Y

Spencer, IA (KICD) — Three people from Spencer were injured in a 2 vehicle accident yesterday just south of Spencer’s North Y.

The Iowa State Patrol says the accident happened around 9:30 Friday morning. 34-year old Aaron Skatjes of Dakota City, Nebraska was driving a semi south on Highway 71 when he slowed to make a left turn across traffic.

A Chevy Impala driven by 19-year old Samuel Van Berkum of Spencer was heading south behind the truck He failed to yield the right of way, rear-ending the semi, with both vehicles coming to rest in the southbound lanes.

Van Berkum and two passengers, 19-year old Benjamin Fox and 19-year old Kaleb Dandy were all taken to the Spencer Hospital. Van Berkum and Dandy suffered Incapacitating injuries, while Fox’s were non-incapacitating.

The crash remains under investigation.
