Defiance, IA (KICD)– A Spirit Lake man is among three people hospitalized following a head on crash Friday afternoon in Shelby County.

Emergency crews were called to the scene on Highway 59 about two miles north of Defiance shortly before 4:45 where it was determined a southbound vehicle crossed the center line and collided with a northbound pickup sending both vehicles into the ditch.

The driver of the pickup, 46-year-old Ryan Wheatley of Spirit Lake, and an unidentified child were both taken to a local hospital with undisclosed injuries. The other driver, 19-year-old Evan Edwards of Council Bluffs, was taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation, but we are told Wheatley was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.
