Cherokee, IA (KICD)–The cause and manner of the death of a Cherokee man who was acquitted in a high-profile murder of a young Spirit Lake girl is under investigation.
Cherokee Police were notified Wednesday that 41-year-old Jesse Wendelsdorf had been admitted to the hospital in serious condition on Tuesday. Wendelsdorf died at St. Lukes Hospital in Sioux City Thursday evening.
Wendelsdorf was acquitted of first-degree murder and sexual abuse in 2000 in connection to the death of 2-year-old Shelby Duis after a jury found him not guilty.
An autopsy is set for this weekend.
