Storm Lake, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Prosecutors in Cherokee and Buena Vista counties expanded the criminal case against former auto dealer Dan Winchell this week, filing 14 total felony counts following an extensive Iowa DOT investigation.

On Monday, February 9, Buena Vista County Attorney Paul Allen filed four new counts of ongoing theft, adding to the ten counts previously filed by Cherokee County Attorney Ryan Kolpin.

Winchell is accused of misappropriating customer funds and stealing vehicles throughout 2024 and 2025 by withholding state registration fees and selling dozens of vehicles “out of trust” without repaying bank loans.

Winchell is represented by defense attorney Michael Kuehner of Des Moines. The former Holzhauer Motors dealer is currently free on a $25,000 bond. His arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, in Cherokee County, followed by a second appearance in Buena Vista County on February 23.
