Kossuth County (northwestiowanow.com) — A major northern Iowa wind farm may soon get a significant upgrade to help stabilize the region’s power grid.

Alliant Energy is proposing a 75-megawatt battery storage system for its Golden Plains Wind Farm, located in Kossuth County. The project aims to store wind energy to meet high demand.

Alliant Project Manager Justin Foss says the need is urgent.

The utility has already received approval from the Iowa Utilities Commission.

It is now seeking a special use permit from Kossuth County officials. Alliant hopes to begin construction early next year and have the battery system operational in 2026.
