Hinton, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) – We have few new details this morning about a Saturday accident involving a bus carrying a Remsen St. Mary’s girls basketball team. Multiple emergency agencies including the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department and Hinton Fire and EMS say there were multiple injuries, triggering the declaration of a “mass-casualty” incident. The Sheriff’s department says patients were treated at the scene, transported to local hospitals by ground ambulance, and it appears at least one was transported by medical helicopter.

Hinton Fire Chief Cameron Pierce says his department was dispatched at 12:53 Saturday afternoon to the report of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 75 and County Road 80 – placing it less than a mile from the Woodbury County line. They arrived to find a passenger vehicle fully engulfed in fire.

The Sheriff’s department says a 2014 StarCraft Prodigy bus carrying the team attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Highway 75 North and was struck by a Southbound 2016 Jeep Compass. The identity of neither driver has been released.

Additional agencies on the scene included: The Iowa State Patrol; The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Department; The Sioux City Fire, Rescue, and Police Departments; the Hinton Police Department; The Iowa D-O-T; and EMS and ambulance crews from Merrill, Kingsley, Sergeant Bluff, and Lawton.

The Remsen St. Mary’s Basketball team was headed home from a scrimmage in Dakota Dunes. Two years ago, the Hawks lost in the semi-final round at state basketball after an 11-0 regular season record.
