Cherokee, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department has charged a 66-year-old man with first degree murder. Sheriff Derek Scott says the county received a 9-1-1 call just after midnight Monday about a victim being run over by a motor vehicle East of town. Efforts to save the life of Christopher Wheeler were unsuccessful.

66-year-old Richard Hammond was later identified and booked into the Cherokee County Jail without bond, and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation has been called in.

The Cherokee Police Department, Fire Department, and Ambulance team assisted at the scene.
