Cherokee, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — The murder trial for a Cherokee man has been scheduled for March 10th, about 11 months after he was accused of running down a Sutherland man in a pickup.
66-year-old Richard Hammond was arrested April 21st after witnesses say he intentially struck 47-year-old Christopher Wheeler in the yard of a home East of Cherokee. Wheeler later died.
If convicted of 1st degree murder, Hammond would receive a mandatory life prison sentence.
