Des Moines, IA (northwestiowanow.com) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is advising the public to avoid swimming and other water activities at more than a dozen state beaches due to elevated levels of E. coli.

Among the affected locations are two popular sites in the Iowa Great Lakes region: Crandall’s Beach on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake, and the swimming area near Emmerson Bay Campground on West Lake Okoboji.

According to officials, high E. coli levels have been detected at numerous state-monitored beaches, posing the potential health risk to swimmers.

A complete list of impacted beaches can be found on the Iowa DNR website.
