Spencer, IA (Northwest Iowa Now) — A former long-time Fire Chief in Spencer has passed away.

Doug Duncan served as Chief of the Spencer Fire Department for 27 years. The department made a post on their Facebook page Monday afternoon, saying Duncan demonstrated a strong commitment to duty, public service, and the traditions of the profession of fire safety. During Duncan’s tenure as Fire Chief, he was instrumental in the city purchasing the very first ladder truck, the addition and remodel of what is now the Spencer Fire Station, and the implementation of Spencer Fire as an EMS service.

Duncan passed away at the age of 74 on Friday, February 27th in Sac City. There will be a joint Celebration of Life Service for both Doug, and his wife Kate, who passed away in 2024. The Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City is handling arrangements.
