E-Hawk Girls Pick Up Marquee Win, Mustang Boys Use Strong 4th Quarter to Win

Emmetsburg, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – Big Country 107.7 brought you a Twin Lakes Conference battle as Emmetsburg hosted Newell-Fonda.

The girl’s game had all the makings of a blockbuster, featuring the #1 in Class 1A, unbeaten Mustangs against the #7 in 2A and 14-2 E-Hawks.

It was close throughout. Newell-Fonda led 15-12 after the first quarter, but Emmetsburg came back by outscoring the Mustangs 14-7 in the 2nd to lead 26-22 at the half.

Dylan Fiene was already in double-figures for Emmetsburg after the first half with 11.

Emmetsburg came out strong in the 3rd quarter, growing their lead to 9 with a 16-11 advantage through that 8-minute period.

Newell-Fonda tried mounting a charge back, outscoring the E-Hawks 15-7 in the 4th, but came up short, and Emmetsburg picked up the 49-48 win.

The Mustangs were led in the loss by Ellie Sievers, who scored 10 of her 15 points in the 2nd half. Newell-Fonda drops to 14-1 this season with their first blemish on the campaign. Newell-Fonda is now 7-1 in the Lakes Conference.

Emmetsburg was paced by 19 from Dylan Fiene. Rachel Schany was also in double figures with 16 as Emmetsburg improves to 15-2 this season and parks themselves in the Twin Lakes Conference drivers seat with a 8-0 league mark.

The Boys contest got off to a similar start with Newell-Fonda leading 15-13 after the first quarter. The E-Hawks inched closer in the 2nd half, and trailed 28-27 at the half.

The Mustangs had two scores with double-figure first halves in Jacksyn Hogrefe and Kinnick Kaufman who was coming off the bench.

Emmetsburg took a lead in after the 3rd quarter, outscoring Newell-Fonda 15-10 in that period.

The 4th quarter was all Mustangs though, as Newell-Fonda outscored the E-Hawks 22-12 in the final period to win 60-54.

Hogrefe ended up with 23 on the night. Kaufman had 15 and Andrew Greenfield was also in double figures with 11 in the win for Newell-Fonda. The Mustangs are now 6-10 on the season and 4-4 in the Twin Lakes Conference.

Emmetsburg also had 3 scores in double figures with Cooper Chizek, Marc Maina, and Matt Malm. The E-Hawks fall to 6-9 this year and 4-4 in the Twin Lakes Conference.
