Johnston, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Iowans facing food insecurity are getting a protein rich boost this winter thanks to a major donation from Fareway Stores.

Fareway announced it’s donating more than 69,000 pounds of ham to food banks across the state. The gift totals over $5500 including individual hams, spiral and premium carver.

While we see the impact locally at our Spencer Fareway, this company-wide effort is spreading the help statewide. Food Bank of Iowa will receive 60 percent of the donation, and remaining 40 percent split between Siouxland Food Bank and River Bend Food Bank.

Food Bank officials say the generous gift will fill more than 276,000 plates for families in need.
