Federal Budget Cuts Threaten Summer Jobs, Northwest Iowa Economy

(Arnolds Park, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) -Big news that could hit our local economy hard. The J-1 Exchange Program, which brings hundreds of seasonal workers to Northwest Iowa, is under threat. A proposed federal budget cut could slash funding for the program, and local leaders are sounding the alarm.

Arnolds Park Amusement Park alone relies on over 100 international students to keep things running smoothly. But a proposed 93% cut to the State Department bureau that oversees the program could wipe it out.

The park’s CEO, Jon Pausley, says losing these workers would be a huge blow.

Pausley says finding local workers for the amusement park who have free schedules for the busy summer months is a challenge.

Pausley and others are urging people to take action. There’s a petition on the Arnolds Park website, along with contact info for representatives.
