SHELDON, IA (Northwestiowanow) — Sheldon firefighters responded to a reported fire inside the Kent Feeds plant late Sunday night.

Authorities say the call came in at 10:39 p.m. on November 23 for a fire in cooler number seven. The reporting party told dispatch they believed the fire was out, but smoke was still heavy in the building.

Fire crews arrived to find smoke in the production area and later located a cooler on the second floor that was hot and smoldering. Firefighters advanced a hose line and opened the cooler door, which allowed oxygen to enter and reignite the product inside. Crews applied water to extinguish the fire and checked for any extension.

Employees began removing the product and dumping it outside, where firefighters applied additional water. Damage was confined to the pellet machine and product. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

The Sheldon Fire Department responded with 15 firefighters, used about 3,000 gallons of water, and was assisted by the Sheldon Police Department.

Crews cleared the scene and returned to service at 1:00 a.m.
