Spencer, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — Dangerous cold is settling over Spencer just as crowds arrive for the University of Okoboji Winter Games, and local doctors say you need a safety plan before heading out.

Dr. David Keith is the Medical Director for Clay County Public Health, and he warns that in these conditions frost bite can begin quickly.

But the bigger danger this weekend might be hypothermia, which happens when your core temperature drops too low.

And if you’re celebrating at the Games, be careful with the alcohol. It might make you feel warmer, but it actually rushes blood to your skin and drains your body heat faster.

The best defense? Dress in layers, keep your skin dry, and take plenty of warm-up breaks so you can enjoy the Winter Games safely.
