Gilbert Sentenced to 22 Years for June 2024 Crimes

(Spencer, Iowa) — A man facing multiple felony charges for incidents that occurred in June of 2024 has been sentenced to prison.

On January 7th, District Court Judge Shayne Mayer sentenced Derek Edward Gilbert to a total of 22 years in prison.

Gilbert pled guilty to Sexual Abuse in the 3rd Degree, two counts of Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Air or Blood Flow, and Domestic Abuse Assault with Intent to Inflict Serious Injury.

Court records show the sentences for the sexual abuse and choking charges will run consecutively—meaning one after the other—while two lesser assault charges will run concurrently.

As part of the plea arrangement, a charge of 1st Degree Kidnapping was dismissed by the court. Gilbert has also been ordered to register as a sex offender and complete a sex offender treatment program.
