Northwest Iowa — Over the Labor Day weekend, we had plenty of precipitation from slow-moving showers and thunderstorms, especially on Sunday. The Graettinger area reported 6.5 inches of rain that fell in a short period of time. Several locations were under a Flash Flood Warning, including Emmet and Palo Alto counties, as well as Cherokee, Lyon, and Osceola counties.

On the morning of Sept. 6th, the Storm Prediction Center upgraded our region to a Level 3 of 5 risk for excessive rainfall.

Here in Spencer, we recorded 2.6 inches of rain over the three-day weekend. Clay County Emergency Management Director Eric Tigges said, “The rivers are very low, and we were quite dry, so we have plenty of capacity to handle the rain. Rivers will obviously rise but should stay well below flood stage.”
