(NorthwestIowaNow.com) —  New details are emerging from the Iowa State Patrol about the tragic charter bus crash that claimed the life of 19-year-old Iowa Lakes baseball player Carter  Johnson.

Investigators say the crash occurred on Highway 4 when the 74-year-old  bus driver failed to negotiate a curve, overcorrected, and caused the bus to roll. The section of road, known as the “Jolley curve,” has been the site of four fatal accidents in the last decade.

While all 32 other occupants were injured, there is a glimmer of hope today: the three individuals airlifted to Des Moines are now reported to be in stable condition.

To honor Carter’s memory, the Iowa Lakes Community college has established the Carter “Tater” Johnson Memorial Scholarship to support future students who share his relentless work ethic. A separate Baseball Family Relief Fund is also active to assist the dozens of players and families still recovering.
