Des Moines, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — The Iowa State Fair continues welcoming visitors through this Sunday, and now a new Queen reigns over the fairgrounds, Riah Schrage of Grundy County was crowned on August 9th.

A local County Fair Queen earned first runner-up: Ashlyn Gunnerson of O’Brien County. Gunnerson graduated this year from South O’Brien High School and is a member Caladonia Ramblers 4H Club. We met Ashlyn during the KICD County Fair Tour in July, and she talked about her last year participating in the fair.

To be crowned the Queen of the Iowa State Fair, the selection process is tough. After being crowned at their respective county fairs, contestants ages 16 to 21 have to submit a resume and state why they want to be queen to qualify. Many have packed resumes that include 4-H, FFA, music, sports, and the arts.

Gunnerson is the daughter of Brian Gunnerson and Cristie Tewes of Paullina.
