Okoboji 3rd, HMS 4th, and Tigers 5th at Spencer Early Bird Tournament

Spencer, Ia (KICD) – The Spencer Volleyball Team hosted their Early Bird Tournament on Tuesday.

The 6-team tournament featured two pools of 3 teams. The North Court Pool had Algona, Okoboji, and South O’Brien while the South Court Pool had Spencer, Manson-Northwest Webster, and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.

Steven Cutler had the call of the Spencer matches on SMUnet.net and Spencer Channel 3.

In the first round of games, Algona beat South O’Brien 2-0, taking set 1 21-14 and set 2 21-12 on the North Court. On the South Court, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn lost to Manson-Northwest Webster 2-0 with a 21-13 set 1 and a 21-18 set 2.

For the second round on the North Court, Algona beat Okoboji 2-0 with a 21-15 set 1 and 21-18 set 2, advancing the Bulldogs to the Championship Match.

Spencer would take on Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn on the South Court to get the Tigers night started.

The 2-0 sweep of the Tigers would finish HMS’s pool play at 1-1.

Okoboji would beat South O’Brien 21-18 in set 1 and then 21-15 in set 2, putting the Pioneers in the 3rd Place match while South O’Brien moved in to the 5th Place Match.

Spencer faced off with Manson-Northwest Webster for each team’s second match.

After the fun, back-and-forth 2-1 win for Spencer, all three teams in the South Court Pool were tied with 1-1 records.

Manson-Northwest Webster would advance into the Championship match based on their set record of 3-2. Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn had the win over Spencer, so the Hawks moved in to the 3rd Place match while Spencer was put in the 5th Place match.

Algona had no trouble with Manson-Northwest Webster in the Championship match, dispatching the Cougars with a 21-14 first set and 21-18 second set to win 2-0. Algona came away with the Tournament win and a 3-0 record. Manson-Northwest Webster finished the evening in 2nd at 1-2.

Okoboji jumped out quick against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, winning 21-14 in set 1. An exciting set 2 got to the 2nd match point in order to decide it, with the Pioneers winning 22-20. Okoboji finished 2-1 with 3rd place and Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn ended in 4th at 1-2.

Spencer and South O’Brien wrapped up the night on the South Court for the 5th Place match.

Spencer’s 2-1 match win helped the Tigers come out of the Tournament in 5th with a 2-1 record while South O’Brien finished 0-3 in 6th.

Also on Tuesday, Alta-Aurelia took on OABCIG in a non-conference match.  The Warriors came away with a 3-2 win to start the season at 1-0.
