Spencer, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – It was more Lakes Conference action in the Fieldhouse Tuesday night as the Spencer Tigers hosted Estherville Lincoln Central for a Girls and Boys Varsity double-header.
Calista Frankenstein scored 7 first quarter points for the Tigers as they led 12-7 after the first 8 minutes of play.
The Tigers grew their lead to 13 after a fast start to the 2nd quarter. Spencer shifted into a 1-3-1 zone defense that forced a lot of Turnovers and the Tigers led 28-15 at the half.
Frankenstein hit a pair of 3 pointers in the 3rd quarter, and the Spencer defense continued to dominate as the Tigers outscored ELC 15-9 in the 3rd quarter to lead 43-24 going into the 4th.
Coach Matt Stevenson said in the postgame that the Tigers wanted to hold Estherville Lincoln Central under 30 points on the night, and the defense cranked up the pressure some more in the 4th, holding ELC to only 4 points as Spencer coasted to a 53-28 win.
Maddy McWhirter, who missed the first 13 games of the season due to an injury sustained over the summer, made her return for her Senior year Tuesday night, giving Spencer 4 points off the bench.
Calista Frankenstein scored 19 on the evening, hitting three 3-pointers. Kennedy Greattinger was also in double figures with 12. The Tigers had 8 scorers on the evening, 4 of them with multiple field goals as they improve to 8-6 on the year and 2-3 in the Lakes Conference.
Estherville Lincoln Central was led by Grace Nath’s 8 points on the evening. ELC falls to 2-15 on the year and 0-4 in the League.
The Spencer boys got off to a good start in the first quarter, but some turnovers in the final 2 minutes let Estherville Lincoln Central close the gap to 16-14 after the first.
Both teams struggled mightily in the 2nd Quarter with turnovers piling up on both ends, especially travels. Estherville Lincoln Central led 22-21 at the half after the two teams combined for only 13 points in the 2nd.
Something clicked for Spencer in the 3rd quarter, as the Tigers outscored ELC 17-11. The Tiger defense was all over ELC with a full-court press that sped the game up significantly, and Spencer led 38-33 going into the 4th.
Spencer not only kept that pace up in the 4th, but increased it, scoring 22 points down the stretch to roll away from Estherville Lincoln Central in a 60-42 win.
Dylan Timmer led 9 Spencer scorers with 14 points. The Tiger bench contributed 19 as Spencer improves to 3-10 this year and 2-3 in the Lakes Conference.
Kaden Fechter hit three 3-pointers in the loss for ELC on his way to 13 points. Estherville Lincoln Central falls to 5-11 on the season and are now 1-5 in the Lakes Conference.
