SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow) – The Spencer Community School District is highlighting bus safety during National School Bus Safety Week, which runs October 20–24.

Transportation Director Melissa Merrida says the third week of October is a time to reinforce safety protocols and educate the public about the importance of school bus safety.

Merrida says the district has taken steps to reduce risk by placing bus stops away from busy streets and equipping buses with safety features like flashing lights and guardrails. But she says the most important safety measure is driver awareness.

So far, besides a handful of stop arm violations, Merrida says the numbers have been low this year, and the community is doing well overall. She encourages drivers to stay aware and reminds students to stay seated and quiet to avoid distracting bus drivers.

Spencer Community Schools will continue promoting safety throughout the week.
