SPENCER, IA (Northwestiowanow) — Members of the Spencer community gathered Thursday evening to break ground on the long-awaited splashpad project.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held May 14 at the Riverview Complex, next to the Spencer Aquatic Center.

Mayor Donovan Wunschel says the project has been years in the making and noted he has pushed for a splash pad since his time on the city council more than six years ago.

He also thanked residents for their strong support in bringing the project to life.

With Thursday’s groundbreaking, construction can now officially get underway.

The splash pad is expected to open in the spring of 2027.
