Spirit Lake, Ia (Northwest Iowa Now) – Spencer’s boys wrestling team attended a dual meet on Thursday night hosted by Spirit Lake/Park with Humboldt also attending.
In the first dual of the evening, Humboldt and Spirit Lake collided.
SLP started off with Ethyn Bennett picking up a major decision win at 106 against Mason Frideres of Humboldt. The Wildcats responded with a win by fall from Spencer Scranton at 113. Tyson Dewall of Spirit Lake/Park pinned Dylan Frideres at 120 and Spirit Lake/Park led 10-6 through the first 3 matches.
Humboldt took 3 of the next four matches, two by fall from Henry Kramer and Jonny Hayden with Caleb Vinsand picking up the 14-9 Decision at 144 against Kyler Hagedorn. The Wildcats led 21-13 at the midway point.
Humboldt was able to win 6 of the final 7 matches, all by bonus points with Tate Halverson getting a Major Decision, Jaxon Kirkhoff and Broedy Hendricks picking up Tech Falls, and Braden Downs, Ayden Feingo, and Kole Olson all winning via fall. The lone Spirit Lake/Park victory in the second half of the dual was from Braedin Nebelsick who pinned Caden Fredin in the 2nd period.
Humboldt took a fully contested dual by a score of 53-19.
The next dual would be between Spencer and Humboldt, the second meeting between the two schools with the Wildcats winning the first back on January 15th 57-22.
The Tigers would have four open weight classes, forfeiting 28 points to Humboldt.
Caden Gress and Peyton Sutherland each picked up wins by fall for Spencer in the 113 and 120-pound classes respectively. Humboldt’s Karsen Reinhardt answered with a Tech Fall win for the Wildcats at 138. Easton Beehler would pick up a hard fought 4-3 Decision win at 144 and Spencer trailed 23-15 after the first 7 matches.
Jaxson Kirkhoff Tech Falled Spencer’s Gavin Hurst at 150. Braden Downs got a couple more bonus points in a Tech Fall win against Spencer’s Noah Fullhart at 165, and Spencer trailed 39-15 going in to the final four matches.
The Tigers took 3 of those last four with both Temi Otanyiyi and Tallen Lorenzen winning by Fall and Jake Schipper picking up a Major Decision victory. Broedy Hendricks pinned Tate Zinn of Spencer at 190.
Humboldt capped off a 2-0 evening with a 45-31 win against Spencer as the Wildcats improve to 15-5 on the season. They will wrestle the North Central Conference Tournament on January 24th.
The final dual of the evening was a rough one for the Tigers. Spencer once again forfeited 28 points to open classes.
Caden Gress gave Spencer a win by fall at 113. Paytn Sutherland lost by 18-8 Major Decision in a high paced, intense match against Spirit Lake/Park’s Tyson Dewall at 120.
Kyler Hagedorn pinned Isaac Steele at 138 and Easton Beehler answered with a 7-0 Decision win against Spirit Lake/Park’s Kyson Jalas at 144. Spencer trailed 28-9 at the midway point.
Braeden Nebelsick got a Tech Fall win for SLP at 150, and Nick Frangenberg pinned Noah Fullhart of Spencer at 165.
Spirit Lake/Park had the dual locked up going into the final four matches with a 45-9 lead.
Spencer won those final four matches, with Temi Otanyiyi at 175, Jacob Schipper at 215, and Tallen Lorenzen at 285 all pinning their opponents. Tate Zinn won a 14-10 Decision at 190 for the Tigers, but the late effort wasn’t enough as Spirit Lake/Park won 45-30.
Spirit Lake/Park is now 9-9 on the year and 3-0 in the Lakes Conference.
Spencer falls to 9-11 on the year and will wrap up Lakes Conference Duals at 2-2.
Both teams will wrestle the Lakes Conference Tournament on January 29th.
