SPENCER, IA — Spencer Mayor Steve Bomgaars leaves office at the end of the year. Even though he only served two, two-year terms – he presided over the city’s greatest natural disaster.
He immediately recognized the need to have one person in charge of recovery and persuaded his immediate predecessor – former Mayor Kevin Robinson – to come on board.

Robinson then went on to become City Manager. Bomgaars says he’s both impressed with the speed with which local residents and businesses started to rebuild, and disappointed at the time aid from the federal government is taking.

Prior to serving as Mayor, Bomgaars spent 17 years on the city council.
