STORM LAKE, IA (Northwestiowanow) — The Storm Lake Fire Department has launched its annual “Keep the Wreath Red” campaign to promote holiday fire safety.

Throughout the holiday season, a wreath with red lights will be displayed in front of the Storm Lake Fire Station. Each time firefighters respond to a structure fire, one red bulb will be replaced with a white bulb. The goal is to keep the wreath completely red, serving as a visual reminder for residents to decorate safely.

The campaign focuses on preventing fires caused by holiday decorations and electrical hazards. Fire officials urge residents to inspect light strands for damage before use, choose UL-approved lights, and avoid using indoor lights outdoors. They also recommend limiting connections to three strands, keeping cords away from staples and carpets, and plugging outdoor lights into GFCI outlets.

Christmas trees should be placed at least three feet from heat sources and watered regularly to prevent drying out. Officials advise against placing candles near trees and suggest using flameless alternatives.

Decorations should be flame-resistant, exits should remain clear, and all lights should be turned off before leaving home or going to bed.
