Storm Lake, IA (Northwestiowanow.com) — Area Fire Departments are commemorating National Fire Prevention Week with educational campaigns.

In Storm Lake, safety is being stressed at pre-schools with members of the fire department visiting Storm Lake Head Start, Ready Set Grow, Storm Lake Community Preschool, Grace Lutheran Preschool, St. Mary’s for High 5, and the Storm Lake Early Elementary.

They are also doing a fire-prevention presentation Friday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 at La Juanita Taqueria at 613 Lake Street.

Fire Inspector / Investigator Blake Severson says special emphasis this year is on the proper use and disposal of lithium-ion batteries.

The Stom Lake Fire Department recently started a cadet program to allow teens aged 14 to 19 to attend fires to observe firefighters firsthand, and launched “Community Connect” on their website, where residents may register their homes online with specific information about their homes and residents so officials have that information already when they might be called out to that address.
