Storm Lake, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — The City of Storm Lake has earned a top spot in the state for it’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and innovative local government.

State Auditor Rob Sand recently announced Storm Lake has been named Best Performing City in his 2026 Public Innovations and Efficiencies program. Storm Lake tied for the top honor in the large cities category (over 10,000 population) alongside Fort Madison.

Auditor Sand launched the PIE program in 2019 to help communities in Iowa slash waste and save tax dollars. He says the PIE recipe focuses on small, common-sense changes that can lead to millions of dollars in collective savings across the state.

Storm Lake was recognized for Cost-Saving Innovation, environment stewardship and transparency and communication. Sand will visit the city in the future to present a “pie” and the award.
