Sheldon, Iowa (NorthwestIowaNow.com) — On Friday, March 27, 2026, a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 18 and 34th Avenue in Sheldon resulted in one hospitalization and a traffic charge.

At approximately 7:25 a.m., 75-year-old Dennis Popkes was traveling eastbound in a GMC pickup when he entered the intersection on a red light, striking a northbound Chevy SUV driven by 49-year-old Jackie Holz. Popkes told investigators that the sun was in his eyes, preventing him from seeing the signal clearly. A witness on the scene confirmed that Holz had the green light at the time of the collision.

Holz was transported by the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team to Sanford Sheldon Hospital, and Popkes reported no injuries.

The Chevy SUV sustained $15,000 in damages, and Popkes’ GMC pickup sustained around $3,000 damage. Popkes was charged with failure to obey a traffic control device.

Sheldon Police assisted along with Sheldon Fire and Sheldon EMA
